I keep hearing about saas but could somebody explain to me exactly what it is?

It can be confusing but it's simply accessing a service over the internet. The big one that people know is salesforce - it's like an application that you could buy and install on your PC, except with saas you use it through a web browser. If you've ever used outlook web access it's similar to that.
